Driving Occupational Therapy Services provides a specialty service for people following a medical illness or injury which may have affected their ability to drive. This service aims to enhance you or your family members safety and independence, helping you to keep an active lifestyle. Our goal is to enable you or your family member to begin or return to driving safely & legally.
This may involve:

Assessments are conducted by Occupational Therapists who have completed a nationally recognised post-graduate driver training qualification and are registered with the WA Board of Occupational Therapy. These therapists will perform a comprehensive assessment (including: visual & neurophysical screening; cognitive & perceptual testing; road law tests; medication review; brake reaction test etc.) to determine:
ü How a person's medical condition might impact on their ability to drive safely
ü Assess a person's ability to drive (determine physical & cognitive capacity)
ü Reccommend appropriate vehicle modifications & provide training in their use
ü Assess work related driving capacity (including heavy vehicle licenses)
ü Help an individual with an acquired or congenital disability begin driving
ü Complete an ergonomic assessment to determine the best driving posture
ü Help identify alternative transport options to ensure the individual can access the
community and maintain his/her independence
ü Assess a person's ability to drive (determine physical & cognitive capacity)
ü Reccommend appropriate vehicle modifications & provide training in their use
ü Assess work related driving capacity (including heavy vehicle licenses)
ü Help an individual with an acquired or congenital disability begin driving
ü Complete an ergonomic assessment to determine the best driving posture
ü Help identify alternative transport options to ensure the individual can access the
community and maintain his/her independence
Western Australian Law requires that any individual who has sustained a medical illness or injury that may impact on their ability to drive is required to notify the Department of Transport. If you decide not to report a medical condition and you are involved in a traffic incident, you may not be insured and may be prosecuted. Our specially trained Occupational Therapist's can help determine the impact of a person's medical condition/s on driving, and facilitate these individuals to begin or return to driving safely & legally.
Under Western Australian Law, you may be asked at any time to complete an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment to show that you can drive a vehicle safely & legally. Even if you are an experienced driver, you may be asked to complete this assessment because of concerns that your driving skills may be affected by your medical condition/s.

vehicle safely and legally
- You are unable to tolerate driving for long periods due to pain or fatigue
- You are returning to work following an injury and need to obtain your drivers licence,
commercial licence, heavy vehicle licence, or motor bike licence
- You are a first time driver and are unsure whether you are able to obtain a driving
licence with your medical condition/s
- You are concerned about a family members' ability to drive safely

Contact Driving Occupational Therapy Services direct and you may be entitled to subsidised fees via: LotteriesWest Disability Equipment Grant (DEG); Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA); Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC); Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA); Employment Assistance Fund (EAF); or Private Health Rebates (depending on ancillary cover).
